Start the die rolling

A friendly guide to where and how to start playing table top rpg games for free. This article is for people and pets who want to start playing table-top role-playing games but have little or no idea where to start.

D20 Dungeons and Dragons

There is a very big chance that you want to try table-top role playing because you have seen a movie or played a game (Neverwinter nights or the Baldur’s gate series or Star Wars Knights of the old republic role playing games) or read a fantasy book. If you have, then you already have an idea what dungeons and dragons is all about.

For the rest of the people in this world who still do not have a clue what it is about. It is, as the title suggests, about dungeons and dragons, and your game character and every monster and creature in between.

The fourth edition of the D20 system used by dungeons and dragons is offered for free and can be downloaded at http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/msrd

Download the character sheets at http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/charactersheets

Use the Spellbook and the Dice applications for more convenience.

GURPS Lite

GURPS mean Generic Universal RolePlaying System, which really means that you can use the rules to anything you and your friends can think of, fantasy, science fiction, modern day, cartoons, etc. etc. Having a game this flexible would mean that it might be hard getting into it. That is why the creator of the game, Steve Jackson made the Lite version.

GURPS lite offers a free rulebook with limited rules, this should be a good starting point for folks who would like to try out table-top role-playing games.

Download the rule set at http://e23.sjgames.com/item.html?id=SJG31-0004

Download the character sheet at http://www.sjgames.com/gurps/resources/CharacterSheet.pdf

With these documents on your tablet, you can now start a game with two or more friends. You can load the character sheets in adobe reader and annotate it for quick entry. I suggest you also get a stylus for scribbling on your tablet.
